After a very brief and intense battle with cancer, Carl W. Kellem, 67, of Corydon, Indiana, passed away on Sunday, 13 August 2006, at Clark Memorial Hospital in Jeffersonville, Indiana.

A native of Corydon, born April 12, 1939, he was the son of the late Ralph Henry and Fern Elizabeth Lang Kellem. Carl and his wife Elizabeth were residents of Danbury, CT for 24 years prior to his retirement four years ago.

He was a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy and the Naval Postgraduate School, where he earned a Bachelor's of Science and a Master's of Science in Electrical Engineering. He was a retired Naval Officer having attained the rank of Lieutenant.

Carl continued to be an avid sailor throughout his life.

He was a former Associate Professor at the University Of Louisville where he pioneered work in electronic security and developed the electronic security curriculum for the National Crime Prevention Institute.

Carl's next career move was to IBM World Headquarters, where he was responsible for global corporate security. After leaving IBM, he formed his own business as an Independent Security Consultant. His involvement in improving security at The World Trade Center helped to prevent greater loss of life. He then became the founder of a security manufacturing company, RAPOR, where he pioneered improvements in facility access control allowing for better security and throughput to airports and other large facilities.

He retired four years ago to devote more time to his true passion for children, youth, and the community he grew up in and loved.

Carl was a CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) volunteer for children and youth in Indiana and served on the board of directors of Noah's Ark Children's Village in Jeffersonville, Indiana and was a member of Corydon Rotary and Old Capitol United Methodist Church. He also served as president of Indian Creek Trail Association.

Survivors include his loving wife of 41 years, Elizabeth Jarratt Gammon Kellem; two sons, Jeff Kellem of Mountain View, California, and Daniel C. Kellem of Asheville, North Carolina; two brothers, Wayne Kellem of Corydon, Indiana and Ron Kellem of Clarksville, Indiana; three sisters, Ruth Leffler of Clarksville, Indiana, and Nancy York and Susan Simpson, both of Corydon, Indiana.

The funeral was held on Wednesday, 16 August 2006, at the Gehlbach & Royse Funeral Home in Corydon, Indiana. Officiant: The Rev. Douglas Finney.
